This week I told myself that I would read something I wouldn't normally. I scanned the new comic wall for something, and it wasn't long after I found myself reading Gwenpool #0. I will admit I know very little about Howard the Duck and Gwenpool, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I actually enjoyed this book. I will say that its a book that isn't for everyone, but for fans of the characters I think they will be please with the outcome.
Gwenpool #0 opens with a bang and doesn't seem to slow down through its many pages. This $4.99 title lives up to its price and allowed me to laugh here and there. The comedy of the book is not only the most attractive part about this book, but allows the narrative to breathe. It gives the story a sense familiarity, allowing me to follow two new characters deeply and excitedly. Chris Hastings, writer, does a good job of bringing the two main characters to life and their interaction with one another is priceless. There are moments, especially at the beginning of the book that made me laugh aloud. Their personalities mesh well together and Hastings captures them perfectly. The story itself offers intrigue. The humor aspect of the book didn't take away from my curiosity with what was going to happen next. I wouldn't say I was on the edge of my seat, but it still maintained enough excitement to keep me interested. In no way is this book written to be a model for our society, or to talk about issues in America, its more of its own thing that tells a story of two characters that are both lost finding their way. In terms of art Danilo Beyruth puts together many panels that speak directly to the story being told. They offer clear and concise line work, while not muddling the pages. It seems Beyruth had fun with this book, and that's really what should be taken out of it.
Overall Gwenpool #0 is a fun adventure that can sometimes be taken seriously. Mostly though, its a book that gives us humor and does so very well. I look forward to reading the next issue, but I'm not necessarily going to make this a mainstay in my pull. If your a fan of the characters then its a no-brainier to keep reading as they come. Give this one a shot though, I think after all is said and done you'll find that amongst more serious titles, such as Moon Knight #2, this will be a good humorous break for you.
